High School Student Volunteer
High school student volunteers support the Children’s Mercy staff, as well as help make the experience a positive one for patients, families and visitors.
Each opportunity uniquely supports our mission to transform the lives of kids cared for at Children’s Mercy.

Year-round: Currently, we do not have year-round opportunities available for high school students.
Summer volunteer program: Applications for summer 2026 will be open March 2-22. The summer program will run June 1 – July 31. Shifts will consist of one three-hour shift, on the same day and time each week, for nine consecutive weeks. Selected applicants are also required to attend the orientation on May 27, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Positions are very limited. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old by June 1. The following factors will be taken into consideration when selecting candidates:
- Previous service/standing
- Application answers
- Interview scoring
- Availability
- Timeliness of completing application requirements
Please make sure you meet the below requirements before submitting a volunteer application.
Age: High school student volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and still in high school.
Time commitment: One three-hour shift, on the same day and time each week, for nine consecutive weeks — June 1-July 31. Selected applicants are also required to attend the orientation on May 27, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Health and background clearance: The health and safety of our patients and their families is important. Volunteers will be required to complete a health form and receive required vaccinations. Volunteers over the age of 18 are required to pass a background check.
Performance standards: Volunteers must follow hospital policies, maintain patient confidentiality and deliver exceptional service to patients and families.
