Fertility Preservation
We understand how important future fertility can be for your child or teen’s long-term well-being. That’s why we offer compassionate, expert support to help families explore fertility preservation options when certain medical conditions or treatments may affect fertility down the road.
These conditions may include cancer, genetic syndromes like Turner syndrome, bone marrow transplants, rheumatologic conditions, and others. Our team is here to guide you through what’s available and what might be right for your child.
We’ll talk with you about your child’s diagnosis and treatment plan, and together we’ll decide if fertility preservation is appropriate. Our goal is to help you understand each option—its benefits, limitations, and the science behind it—so you can make the best decision for your family.
We partner with the University of Kansas Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (KU REI) team to offer the most current fertility preservation techniques. Options we counsel on include:
- Egg freezing
- Sperm freezing
- Ovarian tissue freezing
- Testicular tissue freezing
Each year, we support dozens of families through this process, performing preservation procedures here at Children’s Mercy and referring others to KU REI when needed.
What to expect
Our goal is to create a fertility preservation plan before any treatment that could affect fertility begins. But every situation is different, and we’ll work with you to find the right timing.
You’ll start with a consultation with one of our fertility preservation providers. If you choose to move forward, our team will coordinate the procedure and keep you informed every step of the way. Tissue samples are sent to KU REI for processing, and their specialists stay involved throughout.
After the procedure, your child’s primary care or specialist team will continue their care. Some familiesreturn for a follow-up about a year later, but ongoing visits aren’t always needed.
Support for Your Family
We know this can be a difficult topic—especially when your child is still years away from thinking about parenthood. Our social workers, psychologists, child life specialists, and chaplains are here to support you and your child emotionally and spiritually through the process.
At Children’s Mercy, you’re in the right place. We’re here to help you navigate this journey with care, clarity, and compassion.
Fertility preservation: One family’s story
Six years ago, Grace’s family chose an experimental fertility preservation procedure while she underwent treatment for Ewing sarcoma, ensuring she would have options for her future. Today, Grace is cancer-free, and her family is grateful for the proactive steps that gave her autonomy and hope for a full life.
