Adolescent Medicine

Description:   The Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Rotation is for trainees who are interested in learning more about specialty care specifically for the adolescent and young adult (AYA) population. This is not a primary care rotation. Trainees will work directly with specialists trained in AYA medicine and eating disorders. The majority of the rotation will be spent working with board-certified physicians in AYA medicine in Children's Mercy outpatient AYA clinics evaluating patients for common AYA health concerns (e.g., menstrual concerns, sexual health, mental health, acne, substance use). Trainees will also see patients in the Children's Mercy Eating Disorder Center. Other possible experiences (not guaranteed) include: clinic at an emergency youth shelter, clinic for patients with orthostatic intolerance, inpatient eating disorder consult service.

Educational objectives:

  1. Describe common medical and psychosocial concerns that uniquely affect AYA health and wellbeing.
  2. Develop comfort and competence in interviewing adolescents and young adults, particularly in taking sensitive histories.
  3. Define the role of the adolescent and young adult specialist in caring for the AYA population.
