Welcome to motherhood: Tips to adjust to life with a little one

Becoming a mom is a big change filled with joy, challenges and lots of special moments. In honor of Mother's Day, we asked moms to think back on their motherhood journeys and share some helpful tips on how to adjust to life with kids. Whether you're just starting out or looking for some new ideas, these tips can help you through the fun and chaos of being a parent.

Enjoy the little moments

One of the best things you can do as a new mom is to write down the little, everyday moments. Keep a journal of your child's milestones, funny things they say and cute behaviors. Writing these things down as they take place is a special way to look back on the early years, especially when you’re tired and could forget.

Shop second-hand

Finding affordable baby items can be helpful, especially when you’re starting from scratch. Check out Facebook Marketplace, consignment sales or local thrift stores for gently used toys, clothes and baby gear for much less money. This way, you can try different things without spending too much. Plus, you can sell or donate items when your child outgrows them.

Bookworm beginnings

Reading books to your child early on can help them develop a love for reading. Stick to a few favorite books during the first year to create a comforting routine. As your child grows, borrow new books from the library to keep bedtime exciting. This helps their imagination and helps create a consistent bedtime routine.

Indoor adventures

During cold months, finding indoor activities for your toddler can be hard. Try visiting places like Ikea, Bass Pro or local pet stores where your child can explore and run around safely. These outings give you a change of scenery and can be a fun way to spend the day without needing to buy anything.

Ditch the comparisons

Every family (and each child in that family) is different, and comparing yourself to others can be tiring. Social media often shows a perfect version of parenthood, which can cause stress. Focus on what works best for your family and give yourself grace. Remember, you're doing a great job!

It takes a village

Parenthood is easier with help from others. Don't be afraid to ask for help from friends, family or other parents. Whether it's arranging play dates, coordinating meals or just having someone to talk to, having a support network can make a big difference.

Self-care is key

Taking care of yourself is important for being the best mom you can be. Simple things like taking a shower, getting dressed or going for a walk can make a big difference. Find activities that help you feel like yourself and make time for them regularly.

Teamwork makes the dream work

Having open and honest talks with your partner is key. Discuss your parenting expectations, fears and needs before your child arrives and keep talking as you go through parenthood together. Remember, you're a team, and supporting each other is important for a happy family.

Celebrate YOU!

Mother's Day is a special time to honor the journey of being a mom. Celebrate your achievements, think about the special moments and appreciate the support around you. Whether it's a quiet day at home or a fun family outing, do something that makes you happy.

Adjusting to life with kids is a unique and rewarding experience. Enjoy the little things, lean on your loved ones and always remember that you’re the best mom for your baby. Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing moms out there!
