This research includes children: • Who are sick and in the intensive care unit and receiving one or more medications to treat that illness. • Health information collected and extra blood and body fluids that are not needed to care for the child will be saved and used to learn more about these body differences and the impact of medication levels during an illness. When children are sick, their bodies may react differently to medications during sickness compared to when their bodies are healthy. Children with medically complex conditions who regularly take medications may experience even more differences when they are sick. Some of the differences during sickness can include swelling, fevers, high heart rate, changes in their liver or kidney function, changes in the way their body breaks down or uses medications, or other differences that researchers are still determining. These differences could result in medication that is not given at a high enough amount to treat the illness, or too much of an amount that could cause other problems in the body. Researchers will learn more about these body differences and the impact of medication levels during an illness.
